What do you remember most from GHS: Football games, green gym shorts, a Nemo themed classroom, sanding and polishing rocks, the English wing and giant cookies. One of my favorite things about my senior year was the partnership with Blackhawk college and taking college courses over my lunch hour. I was a full four classes ahead when I arrived at Augustana and this enabled me to take additional elective courses in my field of choice.

Did anyone encourage you to go into your current field of work: My degree is in American History and I always intended to go back to school and receive my Master's degree. I've worked in several different positions and departments at Von Maur's corporate office. In each department I've been in I've been blessed with a manager that is also a mentor and has pushed me to apply for open positions in new areas where I had very little experience. I have been so lucky to be taught about merchandising, accounts payable, receiving, and now Information Systems. Without this support I would not be where I am today.

What do you remember most from GHS: I was really active in sports - I played all four years of football and went to state in Track! I really remember the time spent with all the friends I grew up with both inside and outside of sports.

Did anyone encourage you to go into your current field of work: I really wasn't sure what I wanted to be and my college guidance counselor at ISU recommended the insurance field, since State Farm and Country Insurance has funded an elite and one-of-a-kind curriculum there. I tried it, and I really took to it and finally felt a sense of direction. Almost 20 years later, I'm still in the field and have found some success. Like anywhere, the people you surround yourself are so important. At Allstate, I have several people who encourage me, provide constructive criticism, and who I can go to for advice. This has really helped me on my career journey. Now I am responsible for developing vehicle insurance programs in the shared economy, such as rideshare insurance for Uber and Lyft. It has been very challenging but also a lot of fun.

What do you remember most from GHS: Wonderful memories and fabulous friendships. I received an excellent education from a wonderful staff of caring educators. I was involved in cheerleading and Maplettes and girls sports when they first became available. I remember the football streak and the iconic snake dance and pep rally for homecoming. I met my high school sweetheart who has remained the love of my life and soul mate for over 40 years. Did anyone encourage you to go into your current field of work: My Mom was supportive, but mostly I knew that I wanted to serve my country from a young age, and I wanted the most physically challenging and adventurous career I could have, which is why I chose the Army. I have lived all over the world and travel to six continents, so I am very proud of the decision I made. I didn't want to be sitting around while other people were defending me either- I wanted to be a part of the defense of our country and our way of life. People also usually don't know that the Army is a great way to get a college degree, too, without being saddled with all of the debt that everyone else has to deal with.

Around that time, a highway patrolman told me I should go back to school, but I had started writing a book and became very excited about the prospect of being an author. I told my mother I wanted to make a living as an writer. She advised that I needed to have a back up/alternate plan, too, and mentioned all the computer classes I had taken in high school and suggested I pursue computers. After some reflection, I agreed that would be a good idea so I could have a marketable skill to fall back on that wasn't foodservice.

What do you remember most from GHS: Dear Geneseo High School, The most I remember from high school would be from shop class. Considering that I was a hands on learner, I knew I had to resort to a broader line of learning instead of college. So I resorted to a technical school at first then I found out about the marine corps. They are hands on and they do schooling for the job that you pick when you join. There's a wide varity of jobs to pick from depending on how you score on the asvab. I use a lot of math and deal with a lot of chemistry. I learned a lot about math in shop class learning the ruler and being able to use the ruler to help with fractions with adding and subtracting. We also use cad the 3D printer software that Mr. Bess taught when I was still there. I hope the school still encourages shop class for people who are not book savvy like I was, because shop class was the most I remember from high school. The teachers genuinely enjoyed teaching and truly cared about their students. The best relationships I had were with my coaches and teammates. Specifically, Coach Komel and Coach Reakes were not only positive influences in my high school career, but I look up to both of them as role models. Did anyone encourage you to go into your current field of work: The field of education has many challenges, and these were made very clear to me when I was looking to pursue a degree in social sciences education. The teachers at GHS were realistic yet encouraging when they learned that I desired to be a teacher. The greatest influence though were the many social studies teachers that I had during my time at GHS. Mr. Brucher, Mr. Aper, and Mr. Harrington not only pushed me to excel academically, but they also helped me navigate my curiosity and love for the social sciences. Although it was my social studies teachers who lead me to my specific content area, all the teachers, librarians, and coaches who I had at GHS supported my exploration and final decision to become an educator.

What do you remember most from GHS: I remember a lot of good times with friends during Speech Team, Group Interp, and Contest Play meets. I loved the many roles I was chosen for in plays and musicals. I also enjoyed being in the color guard during marching band, playing my flute in Honors Band and singing in Concert Choir, Flight Show Choir, and the Madrigal Singers. Some of my favorite memories were winning the Troupe Award for Speech Team during my senior year, playing Mrs. Peterson (with braces on my teeth!) in Bye Bye Birdie my sophomore year, playing Russian Christmas Music during the band's annual Christmas concerts, and being a part of the Madrigal Singers each year. What do you remember most from GHS: I remember the outstanding teachers who helped prepare me for college. For instance, I remember being in college biology courses thinking, "Mr. Ringenberg did a far better job of explaining this in AP Bio." I can also still recite a few of the stanzas of the introduction to the Canterbury Tales, that's a fun dinner party conversation starter.

Did anyone encourage you to go into your current field of work: I can honestly say I didn't even know my field of work existed when I was in high school. And to be honest, for the most part, my field only really started to form while I was in graduate school. FYI -- my graduate training is in pharmacology and toxicology as well as bioinformatics (computer science applied to biological problems) and biostatistics. Today, I lead science teams focused on national security issues, like predicting what chemicals can be weaponized to harm our warfighters, using game theory to identify routes that our warfighters should take (for mission planning purposes) to have the least amount of risk of death or injury (from chemicals, biological warfare agents, and sniper positions). I also lead a large program in predicting the secondary and tertiary effects of a nuclear blast on natural and man-made water infrastructure and agriculture (2 weeks-2 months after thermonuclear detonation, or use of a dirty bomb). Sometimes I even get to brainstorm how adversarial states might enhance human performance through pharmacological, bioengineering and mechanical means. But three teachers, and I feel bad for having forgotten one name, pushed me to pursue math and biology. The one who pushed me for math wasn't even my math teacher -- he had recently become the dean of students in my senior year, and I feel bad that I can't remember his name. I remember my older brother had him for calculus and said he was hard, but fair. Shame, I can't remember his name -- he was very nice and encouraging of me to pursue math. Coach Kiss also was very encouraging of everyone to pursue higher math, and to his credit, I will say he did a fine job teaching calculus -- I do recall some of his lessons about projectile motion (which he is an expert on) popping into my head when taking calculus-based physics in college. Mr. Ringenberg helped nurture my interest in biology, and made biology so easy to understand -- which made college biology really, really easy. It only made sense that in college and graduate school I combine my interests in math and biology along with my interests in computer science and medicine -- and that's how those teachers helped get me where I am today.

What do you remember most from GHS: The class that made the biggest impression on me was AP Biology with Mr. Ringenberg. I remember running gels in homemade gel boxes and working with restriction enzymes. Speech, theater and music were also really important parts of high school for me. I remember friendship, painting scenery, rehearsing in hotel rooms before speech meets in Chicago, memorizing lines, marching band practice in August humidity, and traveling with the band to Florida.

It took up a lot of my time between football & basketball season and all the work we had put in over the years between game day prep, homecoming performances, locker signs, etc. Being involved in a sport like this makes you really close to those you cheer with and encourage your team/town!

Did anyone encourage you to go into your current field of work: Nope! I actually switched my major around 5 times - I just wasn't sure what I wanted to do. I am passionate about fitness and recreation and wanted to do something along those lines so I ended up going the business route and studying Sport Management. I took a few classes on it and new that's what I really enjoyed. I'm happy that I ended up getting my degree in something I like and can do numerous things with.
